Tracing The Fruit Back to The Root
Watering The Seed Podcast - Coach D. Jackson
Have you ever asked yourself, How did I get here? Not just physically—but emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. The truth is, many of the patterns we live out today didn’t start with us. They’re rooted in seeds planted long before we even had a choice.
In Episode 1 of my new podcast series “How Did You Get Here?”, we talk about awareness—the first step to transformation.
The Tree and the Helicopter Seed
There’s a tree in my yard that sheds helicopter seeds. Most of them get raked up, tossed aside, or eaten by birds. But when left on the soil, with water and sun, they sprout. Fragile at first, but if they survive storms, droughts, and even being trampled, they eventually grow into full trees.
That’s how behaviors, habits, and wounds are passed down. They start as seeds—small acts, unspoken pain, repeated choices. If they’re left unchecked, they take root. They grow into full-grown trees that shed more of the same seeds.
Scripture reminds us in Matthew 12:33: “A tree is known by the fruit it bears.” The fruit in our lives—whether it’s anger, rejection, fear, or even resilience and kindness—comes from seeds planted long before us.
The Role of Pathologies
This is where the word pathology comes in. Pathologies are not just medical conditions—they’re behavioral patterns passed down through families and communities. Some are protective. Others are destructive. Awareness means we stop saying, “That’s just how I am,” and start asking, Where did this come from?
Because when you can trace the fruit, you can identify the root. And once you identify the root, you can choose whether to keep watering it or plant something new.
Reflection Question
What fruit is showing up in your life that you didn’t plant? Where might the root be?
“As you reflect on what fruit is showing up in your life that you didn’t plant, give yourself permission to slow down and trace the pattern back. Ask yourself: When did I first notice this behavior in me? Who around me modeled it before I ever had words for it? Does this fruit reflect who I truly want to be, or is it simply what I inherited? Reflection isn’t about judgment—it’s about clarity. The more honest you are with yourself, the more freedom you’ll find in choosing what to water and what to uproot.”
I see the fruit, but I will not fear the root. I am aware, I am awakening, and I am ready to grow differently.

“Seeds, as we close Episode 1, I want you to sit with this thought: The fruit in your life didn’t appear overnight—it came from seeds planted long before you. But awareness gives you the power to choose what grows next.
