When The Cycle Returns - BONUS

By Coach D. Jackson | Watering The Seed

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind..."— Romans 12:2

The cycle didn't Return to repeat the lesson. It brought you back to reveal the transformation.

Have We Been Trying to Break the Wrong Thing?

For most of my life, whenever I heard someone say, "Break the cycle," I immediately thought of ending something negative.

Break the cycle of anger.

Break the cycle of addiction.

Break the cycle of unhealthy relationships.

Break the cycle of fear.

Those are all important. But while reflecting on this series, I found myself asking a question that changed my perspective:

If life itself moves in cycles, are we trying to break something God actually designed?

That question stopped me.

Because the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Scripture never tells us to escape the rhythms of life.

Instead, it teaches us to be transformed within them.

Life Was Never Meant to Be Linear

Many of us unconsciously believe that life should move in a straight line.

We imagine that growth works like climbing a staircase—always moving upward, never looking back.

But that's not how God designed creation.

Morning becomes evening.

The tides rise and fall.

The seasons change.

Seeds are planted, grow, bear fruit, rest, and begin again.

Our own bodies remind us of this every day. We breathe in and breathe out. Our hearts beat in steady rhythms. Even sleep and waking are part of a daily cycle designed by God.

Life isn't linear.

Life moves in rhythms.

Ecclesiastes reminds us:

"To everything there is a season..."
(Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Not a finish line.

A season.

The Divine Creator didn't design life as a straight path.

It's designed with rhythms that continually invite growth.

The Difference Between The Divine's Rhythms and the World's Patterns

This is where everything began to make sense.

There is a difference between God's rhythms and the world's patterns.

The Divine's rhythms are part of creation.

Waiting.

Working.

Resting.

Learning.

Growing.

Sowing.

Reaping.

Grieving.

Celebrating.

These rhythms are healthy.

They shape us into who God created us to become.

But inside those rhythms, many of us develop unhealthy patterns.

Fear.

Comparison.

People pleasing.

Control.

Bitterness.

Shame.

Defensiveness.

Anxiety.

Those patterns aren't created by God.

They're learned.

They often develop through pain, disappointment, trauma, rejection, or repeated experiences that quietly teach us to protect ourselves instead of trusting God.

Life repeats its seasons.

But our responses determine whether those seasons become opportunities for growth—or simply another chapter of the same story.

Romans 12:2 Changes Everything

Paul writes:

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will."

Notice something.

Paul doesn't say:

"Escape difficult seasons."

He doesn't say:

"Pray that life becomes easy."

Instead, he says:

"Do not conform."

To conform means to be pressed into a mold.

Paul is warning us not to let the world shape how we think, respond, or define ourselves.

Instead...

Be transformed.

Transformation begins in the mind.

Because our thoughts shape our beliefs.

Our beliefs shape our responses.

Our responses become habits.

Habits become patterns.

Patterns become character.

Paul isn't calling us out of life's rhythms.

He's calling us out of the world's unhealthy patterns.

The Cycle Isn't the Problem

Think about your own life.

Waiting is a cycle.

Everyone waits.

Panic is a pattern.

Conflict is a cycle.

Every relationship experiences conflict.

Defensiveness is a pattern.

Loss is a cycle.

Every person experiences loss.

Hopelessness can become a pattern.

Success is a cycle.

Pride can become a pattern.

The event isn't always the issue.

The response often is.

That's why two people can experience the exact same circumstance and leave with completely different outcomes.

One grows.

The other becomes stuck.

Same season.

Different pattern.

Breaking the Cycle Really Means Breaking the Pattern

So what does it actually mean to break the cycle?

Maybe we've been using the wrong words.

The seasons of life will continue.

Winter will return.

Spring will return.

Waiting will return.

Opportunities will return.

Transitions will return.

Challenges will return.

The question isn't whether life will repeat.

The question is:

Who will I be when it does?

Breaking the cycle isn't about escaping recurring seasons.

It's about refusing to carry yesterday's unhealthy responses into today's opportunity.

Alignment Changes the Journey

At Watering The Seed, we talk about Empowerment Through Alignment.

Alignment doesn't mean life suddenly becomes easy.

Alignment means your heart is positioned differently.

Imagine two people floating down the same river.

One spends every ounce of energy fighting the current.

The other learns to read the river.

There are still rocks.

Still storms.

Still unexpected turns.

But instead of exhausting themselves trying to control every moment, they learn to cooperate with the current.

Alignment doesn't eliminate resistance.

It removes unnecessary resistance.

When our hearts are aligned with The Divine, we stop fighting the very process He is using to grow us.

Israel Teaches Us an Important Lesson

The wilderness wasn't just a place.

It was a classroom.

Every challenge gave Israel another opportunity to trust The Divine.

Yet the same responses kept appearing.

Fear.

Complaining.

Doubt.

Longing for Egypt.

The wilderness wasn't their greatest obstacle.

Their mindset was.

God kept presenting new opportunities.

They kept responding with old patterns.

Transformation was always the goal.

What Transformation Really Looks Like

Transformation isn't measured by whether life changes.

It's measured by whether you change.

You'll know you're growing when...

The same criticism no longer steals your peace.

The same delay no longer creates panic.

The same rejection no longer determines your identity.

The same conflict no longer pulls you back into old reactions.

The same temptation no longer controls your choices.

The season returned...

But you didn't return to the same version of yourself.

And that's...TRANSFORMATION.

Reflection Questions

  1. Am I experiencing one of God's rhythms or repeating one of the world's unhealthy patterns?
  2. What thought pattern do I need to surrender to God?

Final Thought: Don't spend your life trying to escape The Divine's rhythms. Spend your life allowing The Divine to renew the patterns you bring into those rhythms.

Reflection: The cycle will return but...have NO fear when it does—because the Divine may be growing someone new within it. And that new someone...is you.

If this post speaks to you, share it with someone who needs to know that the cycle will return but they don't have to show-up the same way as they did before.
