When Common Sense Keeps You Common
By Coach D. Jackson | Watering The Seed
“Be not conformed to the patterns of this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Romans 12:2
Common sense becomes dangerous when it becomes the ceiling of your thinking.
Common sense has value. It helps us make practical decisions, avoid obvious mistakes, and navigate everyday life. We need it. But common sense becomes a problem when it becomes the highest level of our thinking.
Because “common” usually means shared, familiar, repeated, and accepted by many. And while that can create connection, it can also create stagnation.
Common Sense Can Become Common Limitation
Sometimes what people call common sense is really just common limitation.
It sounds like:
“Don’t do too much.”
“Be realistic.”
“Nobody in our family has done that.”
“That’s just how life is.”
“Don’t get your hopes up.”
“Stay where it’s safe.”
At first, those phrases may sound practical. But underneath them, there may be old disappointment, generational limits, survival thinking, or fear dressed up as wisdom.
Common sense can help us survive, but higher wisdom helps us transform.
Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Be not conformed to the patterns of this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
That scripture is powerful because it tells us that transformation does not come from copying the pattern around us. It comes from renewing the mind within us.
Common Thinking Can Block Higher Vision
When we only think like everyone around us, we may remain accepted, but we may also remain stuck. Common thinking can keep us in common cycles. Common reactions. Common excuses. Common expectations. Common limitations.
But God does not call us to conform. He calls us to be transformed.
This means we have to be willing to question the thoughts we inherited, the beliefs we accepted, and the patterns we normalized.
Sometimes the stagnant mindset is not loud. It does not always look negative. Sometimes it sounds responsible. Sometimes it sounds protective. Sometimes it even sounds wise.
But the real question is: Is this thought producing growth, or is it preserving fear, limitation, and delay?
Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
That does not mean we should ignore wisdom or walk carelessly. It means our own understanding should not become our final authority.
Commonality Can Become Stagnation
There are things God will call us into that may not make sense at first. Starting over may not make sense. Healing differently may not make sense. Walking away from old patterns may not make sense. Building something nobody in your family has built may not make sense.
But just because something does not fit common logic does not mean it lacks divine purpose.
Higher-level thinking requires discernment. It asks, “What is the divine, the creator is revealing beyond what you can see?”
Common sense often asks, “What has always happened?”
Higher wisdom asks, “What is God making possible now?”
Common sense asks, “What will people think?”
Higher wisdom asks, “What has God assigned me to do?”
Common sense asks, “How do I stay safe?”
Higher wisdom asks, “How do I grow, obey, and move with clarity?”
Isaiah 55:8–9 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
That scripture reminds us that God’s thoughts are higher than human thought. So if we only live by what is common, familiar, and easily understood, we may miss the higher instruction God is trying to give us.
This is why commonality can become stagnant. When everyone thinks the same, talks the same, responds the same, and limits themselves the same, no one questions the pattern. The mindset becomes normal, even if it is not healthy.
Moving From Common Sense to Divine Wisdom
Now let’s be clear: thinking higher does not mean being reckless.
It does not mean ignoring wisdom.
It does not mean calling every impulse “God told me.”
Because some people will say, “I’m moving by faith,” but they are really moving without preparation, counsel, or accountability.
Higher thinking is not careless.
Higher thinking is discerning.
Growth often begins when someone dares to think differently.
Someone says, “This may be common, but it is not my calling.”
Someone says, “This may be normal in my family, but it will not continue through me.”
Someone says, “This may make sense to others, but God is stretching me beyond what I have known.”
That is where transformation begins.
Common sense is not the enemy. But common sense was never meant to replace spiritual wisdom, renewed thinking, or divine direction.
So the next time you find yourself saying, “I’m just using common sense,” pause and ask:
Is this wisdom, or is this limitation?
Is this discernment, or is this old disappointment talking?
Is this protecting my purpose, or is this keeping me stuck?
Is this common sense, or is this common fear?
Because sometimes the very thing that “makes sense” is the thing keeping us in the same place.
And Seeds, we were not created to stay common.
We were created to grow, transform, discern, and rise into the fullness of what God placed inside of us.
Common sense may help you manage where you are, but higher wisdom helps you move into who you are becoming.
Reflection Questions
- Where have I allowed common thinking to limit my growth?
- What belief have I accepted because it was familiar, not because it was true?
- What higher thought might God be inviting me to receive in this season?
Closing Affirmation
I release the mindset that keeps me common. My mind is being renewed. My wisdom is being elevated. I will not conform to stagnant patterns. I will think higher, move wiser, and grow forward.
Reflection: Common sense becomes stagnant when it teaches everyone to survive the same way instead of inviting them to grow beyond what has been normal.
